No holding back...no looking back...just pressing on in Jesus Name!

What's In Your Name?

Porras

~By Sanson Institute of Heraldy (Published on Thursday, October 23, 1969 Seattle Post-Intelligencer)

Early records from Spain indicate that the name Porras is of Castillian origin, that is, it was found primarily in the area which once comprised the kingdom of Castile. Now, however, indications are that the name is widely distributed throughout the entire Iberian peninsula. Among the known variant spellings of this surname are "de Porray" and Porres.

Indications of the noble history of this family name are found in the records of the Orders of Santiago, Calatrava, Alcantara and San Juan de Jerusalem, all of which numbered among their members, persons name Porras. Three of the above mentioned orders were founded in Spain. The fourth, the Order of San Juan de Jerusalem, while Italian in origin, numbered many Spaniards among its members. These military-religious orders, founded at the time of the Crusades, were organized to protect the Christian world from Moslem attack.

Membership in these orders required proof of noble birth. Further indication of the nobility of the Porras family was their membership in the Royal Chancery.

Heraldic records recount that on August 2, 1763 Don Pedro de Porres y Silva was made Conde (Count) de las Atalyas.

The name appears to be rooted in the Spanish word "porrazo" meaning a blow with a cudgel or club.

The Porras coat of arms which is illustrated above (my comment:illustration not available at this time- lpr) is blazoned in a reference work which contains the coats of arms of various Spanish noble families. It shows a silver shield with five blue fleur de lis.

For such a time as this I was placed upon the earth to hear the voice of God and do His will whatever it is...(Gleaned from the song- For Such A Time As This by Wayne Watson)

Upon hearing this song on an airplane on the way to the Philippines (2001) the Lord has called me to become a missionary....and this very same song ministered to my mother on her disoriented state at the hospital (before the Lord healed her right before my very eyes-that was when i witnessed my very first "first class miracle from God" 'thought it only happened in the stories told in the bible). A few weeks later my beloved mother went to be with her Maker. May my Heavenly Father's WILL be done in my life- from a person that is very ordinary and very broken...now i rest in God's will...
