I used to asked a spiritual counselor this question. "I was engaged in conversations with friends who are in the same faith as I am and it was brought up to me that I was being legalistic/judgmental about certain issues and I want to know whether I am being legalistic/judgmental or am I merely obedient to the Lord?". And Her answer was... your intentions are simply to encourage people to do the will of God which is found in the Word of God. Hours after I heard that wise counsel I had this strong desire in my heart and was so "fired" up to be diligent to study the Word of God because I came to a realization that I can lead people astray if I didn't give them good counsel that can only come from the bible (point #1 below) and counsel I learned from those who are wise (point #3 below).
